Trial Account Changes in Publish 58

Submitted by UO_Herald on February 16, 2009 at 12:00 AM CST
UO Development

Originally posted 16 Feb 2009 17:03:12 by Tim “Draconi” Cotten on the UO Herald:

Hail and well met, loyal citizens of Britannia!

Following the enormously positive and constructive feedback we’ve received, the Ultima Online team would like to announce our preliminary plans for changes to trial accounts in the next publish.

These changes will restrict a certain set of advanced features to paying subscribers, and in turn, loosen unnecessary “character age” requirements. Until now, systems and content in UO have not been designed in a way that discourages exploitative use of trial accounts, the abuse of which severely impacts the enjoyment of our players.

The fun of the trial experience will be preserved - trial players will be able to continue traveling our vast world, fight dangerous monsters, join guilds and parties, and even rest in a friend’s home. However, from now on, trial accounts will not be a vehicle of convenience for exploitative behavior.

What is a Trial Account?

A free trial account is a special offer to play UO for free, without activating a subscription, or purchasing a copy of the game.

Therefore, trial accounts should not be confused with the first month of free gameplay associated with buying a release of the game. This first month of prepaid subscription entitles you to all the benefits of a regular subscriber.

Trial Account Changes

Player Housing

  • Cannot place, own, trade, or receive a house

  • Only the “Friend” and “Guild” levels of access permissions will be available

Player Vendors

  • Cannot own or rent

    Travel

    • Cannot enter Felucca dungeons, or the Felucca Lost Lands

    Resources

    • Only receive basic resources (ex: iron instead of hued ore, regardless of skill)

    • No bonus resources (jewels, granite, sand, etc)

    Bulk Order Deeds

    • Cannot receive, use, or turn-in

    Quests

    • Cannot repeat normally repeatable quests

    Factions

    • Cannot join Factions

    Champ Spawns

    • Cannot participate in, or receive rewards from

    Community Collections

    • Cannot donate or receive rewards

These items will no longer be usable by trial accounts:
    • Commodity deeds

    • Skill/stat advancement scrolls (Alacrity, Power, Transcendence, etc)

    • Holiday gifts, special rewards (ex: veteran rewards)

    • Bags of Sending

    • Bracelets of Binding

    • Pet Summoning Balls

    • Soulstones

    Character Age Requirements

Character age requirements related to the above systems will be removed. For instance, the artificial character age requirement for house placement (15 days) is no longer necessary, and was only meant to be a temporary solution.

    Test Centers

Because UO has such a vibrant community of testers, the above restrictions will not apply to the Test Centers. These servers will make all the benefits of regular subscription available even to free trial players, including housing.

    Events

Events are an important part of the Live content cycle. We understand how frustrating it can be to brave harrowing crypts and solve intricate puzzles, only to watch a “young status” player walk by and collect the same reward with little to no risk. Changes will be made to the ongoing events to stop this sort of thing from happening.

    Misc

We are currently discussing ways to reduce resource farming with trial accounts beyond the restrictions listed above. This may include diminishing the amount of iron ore mined or lumber harvested over time, to prevent flooding the market. This is tentative.

Additionally, we’re slating a fix for “ghost cams” (unattended monitoring of Champ Spawns) for Publish 58 as well.

    Summary

We’d like to take a moment and thank all the players who participated in our discussion on the Stratics’ forum, and everyone who sent in feedback.

We believe this is a strong step forward for Ultima Online, and hope you look forward to the rest of Publish 58!

    Yours,

    Tim “Draconi” Cotten

UO Five on Friday

Originally posted 13 Feb 2009 16:04:01 by Chrissay Zeeman on the UO Herald:

Will there be new crafting additions in the Stygian Abyss expansion other than Imbuing?

Yes. We have added new craftable furniture, house addons (such as a soulforge for Imbuing), weapons, armor, and other miscellaneous items (such as a musical instrument, a container, a painting, a sculpture, two different types of mirrors, etc.)

We’ve also extended the crafting system functionality for Masonry to allow for creating exceptional weapons and armor as well as enhancing or repairing them. We have created runic mallet and chisels, same colors and properties as their Blacksmithing counterparts. How players can acquire these new runic tools is still to be determined.

Glassblowing will have a couple weapons that can be crafted by players. They can also be exceptionally crafted and repaired

We are also currently working on an item alteration feature for some of the crafting menus that will allow a player to take Human or Elf weapons and armor and alter them into their Gargoyle equivalents. We will provide more details on this feature as well as the other crafting additions at a future date.
-Leurocian

--

Will Magically Unraveling magic items with Imbuing work with a salvage bag, so we can magically unravel several items at once?

We will be adding a new Unravel Magic Item bag that will allow players to unravel multiple magic items at once. How this bag will be acquired by players is still to be determined.
-Leurocian

--

Are SoT scrolls given to the person that gave the final blow to the monster killed or is just looting rights necessary?

The final blow does not matter. If it is determined that a monster will give a SoT, any player who did sufficient damage to earn looting rights has an equal chance of receiving that scroll.
-Sakkarah

--

If you leave the subserver during a champ spawn does your contribution reset?

You will not lose your spawn points if you leave the subserver during a spawn. However, if you are not back on the subserver before the Champion dies, you will have no chance of receiving the reward. As of Pub 58, all points earned will be wiped at the end of each spawn.
-Sakkarah

--

When champion spawn advances to new levels, does killing spawn from previous level help advance the current level further?

Yes. Killing any creature from any level linked to the currently active spawn will help advance the spawn further.
-Sakkarah

--

Is the champion in the Twisted Weald, Twaulo of the Glade, supposed to be spawning as a paragon?

Any creature in Ilshenar has the potential of becoming a Paragon. After reviewing the increased difficulty this represents, it has been decided to prevent champions (only) from becoming Paragons. This will be effective as of Publish 58.

Champ Spawn Pub 58 Fixes and Q&A

Submitted by UO_Herald on February 13, 2009 at 12:00 AM CST
UO Development

Originally posted 13 Feb 2009 15:10 by Regine on the UO Forums:

This was initially going to be in the FoF but since it turned out to be much longer than expected, we decided to make a different thread altogether.

A number of issues have been identified since the implementation of the champ spawn changes, all of which should be rectified with Publish 58. Hopefully, the following Q&A will address all outstanding questions you may have about this system and how it should be working once Pub 58 goes live.

1. How do I receive SoTs?

You simply have to kill the spawn in the champ area. Each time a creature is killed, every player who did sufficient damage to the monster to earn looting rights has a chance of receiving a SoT. In Felucca, if you are protecting a player receiving a SoT, you will receive a SoT as well as long as you are within range.

2. How do I receive a Replica?

Only players who worked a sufficient portion of the current spawn have a chance of receiving the Replica. You earn points for working the spawn. When the champ dies, a list of all the players having met the minimum point requirement is pulled. A roll is performed to determine whether or not a reward will be given. If yes, the player with the highest spawn points has a 10% chance of automatically receiving that reward. If the top player loses the roll, he’s put back in the list and a random player in that list is given the reward. You MUST be in the area when the champ dies to receive that reward.

The bug which allowed players who didn’t work the current spawn to receive the replica has been fixed and will be in Pub 58.

3. How do I get Powerscrolls?

You must do sufficient damage to the champ to have a chance of receiving a Powerscroll. You do not need to have worked the spawn at all. Protectors receive a random Powerscroll each time someone under their protection receives one as well. Note that the protector must be within range of the protected player. Parking the protector halfway across the world for safety no longer works. You also have a chance of receiving a 105 each time you kill a creature while leveling the spawn.

The bug which allowed players to receive Powerscrolls for simply working the spawn has been fixed and will be in Pub 58.

4. How are the leveling points obtained?

The spawn is divided into 4 levels, each giving a different amount of points for creatures killed. Level 1 and 4 give the least points as level 1 is extremely easy and level 4 is usually extremely short and would unfairly benefit late comers. Each time a creature is killed, every player who did sufficient damage to earn looting rights is given points according to the level of that creature. It is not based on kill shot. Once the champ is killed and the reward has been handed out, the points list is wiped clean.

The bug which causes spawn points to carry over from one spawn to the other, thus allowing players who didn’t work the current spawn to receive the reward has been fixed and will be in Pub 58.

5. What about previous level spawn and left over spawn?

When the spawn levels up, killing creatures from the previous level helps advance the spawn and continues to earn you points. Once the spawn is over and the champion has been defeated, killing left over spawn does not earn you points as the points are only being tracked while a spawn is active and only for the creatures linked to that spawn. However, left over spawn can still earn you a SoT.

6. What is the drop SoT/105 rate?

The drop rate is approximately 3%. In Felucca, whenever a scroll is given, it stands a 50/50 chance of being either a SoT or a 105 PS. In Trammel, the scroll will always be a SoT.

As the RNG caused the drop rate in Trammel to be extremely low, we no longer perform the 105 roll in that ruleset. So whenever it is determined that a scroll would be given in Trammel, a SoT automatically is. This change has effectively evened out the overall SoT drop on both facets.

7. What is the rewards drop rate?

The drop rate is 30%. When the champ is killed, your chance of receiving a reward is broken down as follows:

5 % for unique reward
15% for decorative item
10% for shared reward

Shared rewards are equippables that at least 2 champions can give. In most cases, only 2 or 3 champs will share any given reward. Decorative items are almost always exclusive to each champ. The only exceptions are the lava, swamp and “water” tiles which are each shared by 2 champions.

8. What is the durability of these rewards?

All equippable rewards have a set durability of 150/150. You cannot use powder of fortification on them but they can be repaired using the appropriate skill or repair deed. Some of these rewards are currently spawning with 255/255 durability. This is a bug that has been fixed and will be in Publish 58.

Rewards with 255/255 durability obtained prior to Pub 58 will not be scaled back down 150.

9. What if I’m dead when the champ dies?

If you were chosen to receive the reward and are dead at the time the champ is killed, the Powerscroll or Replica will be placed on your corpse. This feature was not functioning properly for the Replicas but has been fixed for Pub 58. Note that both living and dead players that are overweight or have no room in their backpack or corpse will not get the reward. The heaviest item weights 10 stones so keep that in mind when spawning.

10. Can I leave during the spawn or work multiple spawns at once?

You can leave anytime you want. As of Pub 58, as long as the spawn is active, any points you have earned during that spawn will remain until the spawn ends. Each altar tracks points earned for its own spawn, independently of the other altars. But keep in mind that if you are working Altar B when the boss at Altar A dies, even if you qualified for a reward at Altar A you will not receive it as you were not there. Also, you need to earn a minimum number of points to make it to the list of people eligible for a reward, with a non-negligible bonus for the player earning the most points at a given altar.

11. What’s the deal with some items not losing durability?

Some item slots traditionally weren’t affected by wear and tear. Some of the new Replicas equipped in these slots are therefore not taking damage. This should be fixed in Publish 58. Current items’ durability will not be affected retroactively but will start taking damage after the publish is released.

12. Why does Felucca get SoTs with higher points and dubs for Protection?

The champ spawns were created as an incentive to play in Felucca and to promote PvP. These latest additions are simply meant to breathe new life in a system getting a little stale. Making them available in Trammel as well is so players who do not wish to be involved in PvP can still have access to the new content while rewarding those willing to expose themselves to greater risks.

13. Are Ilshenar Champions supposed to spawn as Paragons?

By design, any creature spawning in Ilshenar has a chance of becoming a Paragon and currently, this is what is happening to champs as well. However, we feel this is making them way too difficult. So as of Pub 58, the Champions will no longer spawn as Paragons. However, the spawn throughout the four levels can still become Paragons.

14. What about ghost cams?

Fixing ghost cams is an ongoing concern and we are working on solutions to effectively rid us of the problem without unfairly punishing or nerfing the legitimate players. As part of a first step in accomplishing this, starting Pub 58, restrictions will be placed on Trial Accounts so they cannot be used in champ spawn areas.

15. How many rewards are there in total?

There are 55 rewards total. To this however, add the fact that the Detective boots have 3 different intensities with 3 different names. The Knowledge shrouds also come with 3 different intensities but similar names and the slimes come in two different hues. The decorative items will now come facing a single direction but the demon skulls, futons and water tiles can be turned to the other facing using the house deco tool.

16. Can I dye these Replicas?

Yes. All the equippable Replicas are dyable with the appropriate tub or with Tokuno dyes. If you are unable to do so with any of these items, please report this through the feedback form so it can be looked into. Make sure that the item in question has the tag. Not to be confused with the original EM rewards which were, for the most part, non-dyable.

Please do not hesitate to post any further questions you need clarified.

As of last week, Joanne Laroche and Mythic Entertainment have parted ways. On behalf of the entire Dark Age of Camelot team, we would like to thank Joanne for her tireless dedication to the game and the DAoC Community. We would also like to wish her the best in her future endeavours. In the interim, both myself and Lori Hyrup will be lending a hand with Community as we work through this transition period. In closing, Joanne was kind enough to write a farewell to the community, that I would like to share with you now:

My fellow Realm Mates,

It is with a saddened heart that I depart the realm of the Camelot Herald. The time I have had representing you has been a phenomenal experience and I will forever hold it dear. The Dark Age of Camelot community is so very strong and the battles will continue on. It has been a pleasure to join all of you in this wonderful game and I am looking forward to all of the good things to come. The Camelot Team has so much passion for the game and its players that I am thankful to have been a part of this energetic group of zergers/tree huggers and hordes.

I will remain on the battlefields with you my friends and enemies. The frontier is where you will find me, standing by your side or battling against you. The Camelot community is the best ever and I will never forget you. Thank you for your support through these years, I hope that you will remember me as kindly as I will remember all of you.

/salute, /hug, /wave

FoF for 2/06/09: More than Five this Friday

Are there significant changes in how SA handles macros vs KR? Will there be any pass to unify the way SA and 2D clients handle macros so make it easier for people to convert?

This is still a work in progress. So far, we’ve added a legacy targeting mode which makes the new client perform much more like the “2D client” in terms of the way you choose to attack other mobs. We’ve also made a special category in the actions window for the “2d client” targeting actions that you guys are familiar with. We still have a few things we would like to get added but I can’t promise they will all make it in before launch:

1.Provide a set of pre-fabricated macros for reference
2.Add more tooltips to help guide the user in macro creation
3.Being able to insert and remove actions from the middle of a macro
4.Being able to import legacy macros into the new client
5.Being able to export/import macros in the new client

Even if some of these proposed features do not make it in before launch, we will continue to work on the macro system and hope to get these improvements out in subsequent patches.

My guildmates and I have always wondered if HLD stacks. For example if you have the Mace & Shield Glasses with 30% Hit Lower Defense, will that stack with your weapons and other equipment with HLD?

All equipment with Hit Lower Defense rolls separately to see if their HLD effect is triggered. If the Hit Lower Defense effect is already on another player or creature and the HLD duration hasn’t expired, subsequent HLD effects only reset the duration.

When using a runic saw to make woodland armor, the exceptional bonus resists from arms lore are not applied. Is this as designed or a bug?

If this is the case, then This is a bug. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Is there a summary of all of the test center commands that details how to set skills, get resources, etc.?

Say "help commands" and "help skills"

Hey I was just wondering when Magincia might be cleared up a little. I find it is getting a little boring having to deal with the Corrupted Souls to go to CoM faction base and giving CoM a rather large disadvantage and bringing about the unpopularity of the faction.

While the corrupted souls are remaining until the city rebuilding event, most of the debris (95%) has recently been removed. The building debris remains, but all the thousands of rubble/trash tiles have been deleted.
-Draconi

--

When will Magincia be fixed? Is there a way for the Felluca side to be fixed faster than the Trammel side? Faction fighting in a city that is destroyed and over-ran by ghosts is kinda hard...

Right now it’s meant for after the launch of Stygian Abyss – we’re ending the current story arc soon and beginning the Stygian Abyss story arc. I would imagine it could be something either facet could complete independently, just like the invasion itself was.

The Adventures of Nexus the Thief: The Tale of a North American Tour by a Britannian Thief

This is a new fan site dedicated to the Thief life style. I will be Cross Sharding to each North American Shard in turn

(excepting Siege of Course)and recording my exploits. In order to accomplish this I plan to steal enough items to sell and buy

Transfer Tokens from other players in order to move to the next shard. Along the way I will attempt to establish a branch of the

Guild THIEF (made infamous by Chad Sexington) on each Server that does not currently have an incarnation of it. To keep things

interesting for readers I won't be disclosing where I transfer to until the first episode on a new shard. The Overall goal is 100+

episodes before the journey ends which should take over a year to complete.

There are currently a couple of episodes posted for the Atlantic Shard, from the past few days and I intend to add additional

episodes as I go about my villainous journey.

Catskills

Comments: The United Pirates of Catskills announce the next Black Market event for Feb. 7th, 8 pm EST!

During this monthly recurring event you can sell, buy or trade your wares! This time, we will also raffle off prizes to those who solved the Ransom and Blood quest.

The facts:

- Merchants can claim a personal market stand in the Black Market building, where they can advertise and sell their products. To do that, the merchants should enter the list of their products into the book locked down on their market stand (at least one day prior to the event, so people can come by and check on the items).

- The prices should be LOWER than the regular Luna vendor prices! Bargaining is encouraged!

- Are you looking for a certain item? You can post your request on the bulletin board out front of the Black Market. Merchants can check the board beforehand and have the appropriate items ready for sale. The board will be wiped after the Black Market is over.

The Black Market building is located next to our Jolly Roger Inn in TRAMMEL:

Update From Mythic

Submitted by UO_Herald on February 4, 2009 at 12:00 AM CST
UO News

Originally posted 04 Feb 2009 12:10:55 by Robert Mull on the UO Herald:

As director of the MMO community here at Mythic, I'd like to refer you to a post made by Mark Jacobs on the Warhammer Herald regarding changes here at Mythic. I'd like to mirror these sentiments for UO. Ultima Online has an active and dedicated community of world-wide players. EA has supported this franchise for over 11 years and as long we have players dedicating themselves to the game that will not change. As a company, EA is proud to have three exciting MMOs UO, DAOC and Warhammer Online in its family of games.

Originally posted by Mark Jacobs on the Warhammer Herald:

Folks,

Mythic has always been committed to maintaining a high level of development and customer service to our MMO players. In anticipation of rumors regarding staff reductions here at Mythic today, this seems like a good time to provide some insight into the future of development, customer service, quality assurance and play testing at Mythic. Though we are resizing the team to move from a pre-launch to a post-launch size, we remain fully committed to creating and delivering the best WAR experience.

We have a very exciting schedule planned for new WAR content and that schedule is unchanged. Over the next few months, the announced "Call to Arms" live expansion events, new careers, new Tomb King themed area and RvR dungeon will be made available to our players as planned.

With respect to customer service, quality assurance and play testing, prior to the launch of WAR, we hired additional people to deal with the rush of demand associated with an MMO launch and to insure the best possible experience for our players. We accomplished that goal and as a result we had the smoothest-ever launch of a major MMO. Since the launch last year, the demand for customer service has gone down as players become more familiar with the game. Obviously, demand for a large QA and play-testing staff also falls after launch. As a result, we saw a staff reduction which is in line with the company-wide initiative. In no way does this conflict with our commitment to customer service. Staffing numbers will always map to consumer needs – it goes up when we launch new products and expand popular ones, and comes back down as players become familiar with the game.

Although we now have fewer developers on the game than we did leading up to the launch, WAR still has a larger dev team today than we ever had for Dark Age of Camelot. At Mythic, we’re committed to maintaining the trust of WAR players – we’re going to deliver the content and service that keeps you playing.
