by Lord DaKaren
Guntur Kivlov: Good evening everyone. And welcome to tonight's Justicar Debate.
Guntur Kivlov: Could I please have each of the candidates sit around me at this table please?
Nevahs Blazefire: *Takes Malag's chair. For reasons. Smiles a little.*
Guntur Kivlov: We seem to be missing one more?
Guntur Kivlov: *looks around*
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you for coming.
Guntur Kivlov: Note that Valeran is not with us tonight.
Guntur Kivlov: None the less... we will continue
Guntur Kivlov: I would like to go over a few rules for tonight's debate
Guntur Kivlov: I will be asking each of you 6 questions.
Guntur Kivlov: You will each answer on your turn, as I direct, in under 5 "paragraphs"
Guntur Kivlov: (a paragraph being a full chat line ))
Guntur Kivlov: Does everyone understand this?
Nevahs Blazefire: *Nods*
The Shadow: Aye
Guntur Kivlov: Mr Tyrell?
Walter Tyrell: aye
Tanda: *raises hand*
Guntur Kivlov: Yes Tanda?
Tanda: Will the audience be allowed questions?
DaKaren: *leans against the wall*
Guntur Kivlov: For the sake of brevity, I will not be taking questions from the audience.
Tanda: *nods*
Guntur Kivlov: You are all welcome to ask any candidates questions after the debate.
Tanda: Understood
Guntur Kivlov: Lets begin.
Guntur Kivlov: Starting With Mr. Tyrell.
Walter Tyrell: *nods*
Guntur Kivlov: Why should we vote for you to be a justicar?
Walter Tyrell: I have a solid record of community service, both as Governor of Moonglow and as a member of the
Walter Tyrell: High Council. I worked with other Governors in running events, saw to the needs of my citizens
Walter Tyrell: and maintained a prosperous and safe environment for my citizens. This was all handled in a fair
Walter Tyrell: just manner. I feel I would handle the duties of a Justicar in the same manner.
Walter Tyrell: *folds hands*
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Mr. Tyrell.
Guntur Kivlov: Mr. LaShadow, the same question. Why should we vote for you to be a Justicar?
The Shadow: You shouldn't.
DaKaren: *arches a brow*
The Shadow: I'm an unknown quantity to all of you. A man should be judged by his deeds, but you have seen
Tanda: *quirks a smile*
The Shadow: none of mine. I can tell you that I am a strong supporter of the cause of Justice.
The Shadow: I can only tell you that it will be my best intent to serve the role as best as I can.
The Shadow: *folds his arms*
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Mr. LaShadow
Guntur Kivlov: Nevahs'en, Why should we vote for you to be a Justicar?
Nevahs Blazefire: *Smiles a little bit.* My family has a history of serving on the high council, and I have access to their journals and the lessons they learned while serving. In addition --
Nevahs Blazefire: I have a small familiarity with the High Council Constitution and the High Court's Charter as well as the
Nevahs Blazefire: Codex of Laws. I don't have them memorized but I do know where to search if a question arises. I also understand that Justice without
Nevahs Blazefire: Compassion is not true justice, and have had an excellent mentor in the Virtues.
Nevahs Blazefire: *Looks over at Malagaste.* That is all, Councilor.
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you.
Malag aste: *smiles slightly with a nod*
Guntur Kivlov: The next question. Mr. Tyrell..
Guntur Kivlov: Please define for us, your definition of "Justice"
Walter Tyrell: Justice should be based on truth, tempered with compassion, and applied to rich, poor, serf or
Walter Tyrell: noble the same.
Walter Tyrell: you were expecting more?
Walter Tyrell: *grins*
Guntur Kivlov: *chuckles*
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Mr. Tyrell.
Guntur Kivlov: Mr. LaSahdow, please give us your definition of "Justice"
The Shadow: Walter defines it well. It is based on Truth. To go further.. it is what keeps the cities stable.
The Shadow: The People of Britannia need to know that criminals won't kill or rob them.
The Shadow: That the Government is looking out for them and keeping them safe against Wrong.
The Shadow: A nation without Justice is tyranny.
The Shadow: *nods his head*
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Mr. LaShadow.
Guntur Kivlov: Countess Blazefire, Please give us your definition of "Justice"
Nevahs Blazefire: With respects to these two gentlemen I agree with their definitions and would add this -- Today Justice means the quality of being fair and reasonable, and having a concern for peace and genuine respect for people.
Nevahs Blazefire: What it meant in ancient times was simply -- 'The Administration of the Law.' I would go one step further and add that Justice does not include any place for vengeance, in spite of the human desire to make it so.
Walter Tyrell: *looks at Malag-aste and smirks*
Nevahs Blazefire: That is all, Councilor.
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you.
Guntur Kivlov: Mr. Tyrell, what are your thoughts on "Right-ness vs Legality"?
Walter Tyrell: Well each situation would have to be dealt with on it's on merits. In a general sense I view your question
Walter Tyrell: as more of the letter of the law as opposed to the spirit of the law.
Walter Tyrell: Taken in that context we would have to also consider when punishing someone for breaking a law
Walter Tyrell: what would be the "right" or suitable punishment. In a just law system one size does not fit all
Walter Tyrell: circumstances.
Walter Tyrell: That is all I have Sir.
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Mr. Tyrell.
Guntur Kivlov: Mr LaShadow, what are your thoughts on Right-ness vs Legality?
The Shadow: Legality overshadows Rightness every time.
The Shadow: The individual citizens do not have the right to choose which laws to follow because they feel it
The Shadow: is an unjust law. Granted, during the punishment stage there can be leniency for those that do
The Shadow: the wrong thing for the right reasons.
The Shadow: That is all.
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Mr. LaShadow.
Guntur Kivlov: Countess Blazefire, What are your thoughts on Right-ness vs Legality
Nevahs Blazefire: With respects, Councilor that's a rather vague question and depends entirely on your definition of "Right-ness". Do you define it as a system of Social Mores according
Nevahs Blazefire: to the beliefs of a particular culture, in this case, Britannian?
Guntur Kivlov: The question is intentionally open ended to gauge your thoughts. You tell us...
Guntur Kivlov: *smiles*
Nevahs Blazefire: Very well. If we assume that "Rightness" is defined by Social Mores, more often that not, the written legal code is more fair and just than "Social Justice". Social Justice or "rightness" depends entirely
Nevahs Blazefire: on the whim of the people. And that's almost never fair, right, or just.
Nevahs Blazefire: I refuse to assume when it comes to a question like that. You can't assume when choosing between right and wrong or the letter of the law or legality.
Nevahs Blazefire: That is all, Councilor.
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Countess.
Guntur Kivlov: The next three questions are more specific, and I will be changing the order of questioning.
Guntur Kivlov: There will also be closing statements from each of you.
Guntur Kivlov: There are no shortage of enemies both domestic and from afar that threaten Britannia.
Guntur Kivlov: Countess, What will you do as Justicar to help defend Britannia?
Nevahs Blazefire: *Smiles a little and looks at Malag-aste again briefly before returning her gaze to Councilor Kivlov.* I will continue to do as I have already done as a member of the Royal Britannian Guard and the Royal Knights of Redemption.
Farimer Tensus: *coughs*
Nevahs Blazefire: whether I am elected as a Justicar or not. But if elected, I will be able to add my knowledge of the law, and research and willingness to listen to "both sides of the story" to any case I hear.
Nevahs Blazefire: That is all, Councilor.
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you countess.
Guntur Kivlov: Mr. LaShadow, What will you do as Justicar to help defend Britannia?
The Shadow: We have the Royal Guard and various militias to defend our great Britannia.
The Shadow: The best I can do as Justicar for them is to get out of their way.
The Shadow: And if that means making sure there are laws to help them. Warrants to arrest the enemies..
The Shadow: Then there is that. And including defending the rights of the citizens of our great nation.
The Shadow: That is all.
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Mr. LaShadow.
Guntur Kivlov: Mr. Tyrell, what will you do as Justicar to help defend Britannia?
Walter Tyrell: As a private citizen and Governor of Moonglow I was a member of that town's militia
Walter Tyrell: and will offer my modest skills if called for.
Walter Tyrell: I would hope as Justicar to do a greater service by seeing that justice, not just punishment
Walter Tyrell: prevails in our land. I will be working if elected to see that qualified individuals are prepared to a
Walter Tyrell: We have a very ad hoc manner of assigning defense counsel and prosecutors and many times they
Walter Tyrell: This sometimes allows the guilty to escape punishment and the innocent to be unfairly
Walter Tyrell: punished.
Walter Tyrell: That would be the way I would hope to serve the land as Justicar if I was elected.
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Mr. Tyrell... Please be aware of our 5 paragraph limit.
Walter Tyrell: Thank you, Sir.
Walter Tyrell: Sorry
Guntur Kivlov: As most of us know, there are many threats to our realm. Some come in large invasion forces,
Guntur Kivlov: Or magical cataclysms... or mysterious forces...
Guntur Kivlov: However, there are also very real and specific threats that come from inside our lands.
Guntur Kivlov: And one such name rings loudly at each and every meeting we now sit at.
The Shadow: *nods*
Guntur Kivlov: The harrier and slaver, and scourge to our lands. A brilliant tactician and ruthless warrior,
Guntur Kivlov: who even now, I no doubt, has eyes and ears in this room...
Kittie: *growls*
Guntur Kivlov: Countess, How will you as Justicar, address the Rouge known as Rodrik Von Karl?
Farimer Tensus: *looks over shoulder*
Nevahs Blazefire: I will support every effort of the Grand Marshall to bring him under the authority of the High Court. There are already warrants out for his arrest. *Pauses thoughtfully*
Dot Warner: *sharpens bladed staff*
Nevahs Blazefire: He has broken numerous laws from the Codex -- and yet at the same time as much as it pains me to say this -- we should never give in to the idea of Guilty until proven innocent.
Farimer Tensus: *rubs staff*
Dot Warner: *snorts*
Nevahs Blazefire: With the assistance of appropriate legal counsel -- he will be brought to "Justice."
Nevahs Blazefire: That is all, Councilor.
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Countess
Guntur Kivlov: Mr LaShadow, how will you, as Justicar, address the rouge villain and tactical genius...
Guntur Kivlov: Rodrick Von Karl
The Shadow: I will address him as Sir.
The Shadow: As is, "Sir, you are under arrest for your crimes against Britannia"
Farimer Tensus: *rubs staff*
The Shadow: A little levity.. tough room. But in all seriousness. Apply pressure not just to him..
The Shadow: But to his associates. Remove his forces and then bringing him in will be easier.
The Shadow: He needs to be stopped!
The Shadow: *folds his arms*
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Mr. LaShadow.
Guntur Kivlov: Mr. Tyrell, How will you as Justicar, Address the rouge Rodrik Von Karl?
Walter Tyrell: I would ensure that our Britannian Armed Forces have all the support in the form of search
Walter Tyrell: warrants to capture this black hearted villain. I would also provide legal direction
Walter Tyrell: to our forces as regards gathering evidence, statements and so forth in order to build
Walter Tyrell: the strongest case possible against Rodrik and his minions.
Walter Tyrell: *folds arms*
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Mr. Tyrell
Guntur Kivlov: In light of the time, I am going to omit the last question and move on to closing statements.
Guntur Kivlov: Countess, could you please give us your closing statement?
Nevahs Blazefire: *Smiles a little thoughtfully and glances down for a moment.* I understand how strongly emotions can run in the light of criminal acts -- especially when they affect us personally. But --
Nevahs Blazefire: We can never forget the definition of Justice -- to be fair and reasonable in all of our dealings. I hope that whoever gets elected doesn't forget that.
Nevahs Blazefire: That is all, Councilor.
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Countess Nevahs'en Blazefire.
Guntur Kivlov: Mr. Bert LaShadow, could you please give us your closing statement?
The Shadow: As I said in the beginning, I am an unknown to all of you. You have no reason to elect me.
The Shadow: I hope that after tonight I have given you reason to let me try.
The Shadow: The roles of the Justices are very important ones. Justice is an important virtue and its been
The Shadow: made unimportant by the likes of Roderick. People like him need to be brought to justice.
The Shadow: And I want to help make that happen.
The Shadow: *bows*
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Mr. LaShadow.
Guntur Kivlov: Mr. Walter Tyrell, could you please give us your closing statement?
Walter Tyrell: I would ask the citizens of our fait land to judge me by my past actions and services.
Walter Tyrell: To be confident that should I be elected I would strive to see justice for all in Britannia.
Walter Tyrell: If not elected I vow to work just as hard to support those individuals elected in any capacity
Walter Tyrell: needed. I seek only to serve. Thank you Councilor and fellow citizens.
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Mr. Tyrell.
Guntur Kivlov: To my fellow citizens, I hope you have listened and considered the answers these candidates gave.
Guntur Kivlov: I hope that you cast your votes after deep consideration of your choices.
Guntur Kivlov: I will now close the debate and open the floor for the next 20 minutes for your questions.
Guntur Kivlov: Please keep them topical and specific.
Guntur Kivlov: Please raise your hands and I will call you.
Tanda: *raises hand*
Guntur Kivlov: Tanda?
Tanda: Thank you
Tanda: How would you react to finding out a member of our Council has violated the law?
Tanda: And M"lord Kivlov
Tanda: you can select the person to answer
Guntur Kivlov: Countess? will you take that one?
Nevahs Blazefire: *Nods*
Nevahs Blazefire: First, a Councilor is granted certain immunities, and so it is very, very important to have absolute proof that a Criminal act has been done. Hearsay just isn't enough. If it is proven that the Councilor did in fact, commit a crime,
Nevahs Blazefire: it is up to at least two officers of the high council to remove that Immunity before the Councilor could be brought to justice.
Nevahs Blazefire: So my first action? Would be seek evidence.
Nevahs Blazefire: Does that answer your question, Councilor?
Tanda: *nods*
Tanda: it does
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Governor Knighthawke and Countess Blazefire. Next question?
Dot Warner: *raises hand*
Guntur Kivlov: Governor Warner?
Dot Warner: Given the revolving doors on the oft-escaped-from Britannian correctional institutions, how might the candidates apply the death penalty to the more...egregious offenders?
Guntur Kivlov: Tyrell, can you begin with that one?
Walter Tyrell: If an individual is convicted of a capital offense and seems to present a clear and
Walter Tyrell: present danger to our citizens I would not be opposed to seeking the death penalty
Walter Tyrell: and seeing that is carried out in accordance to our laws.
Walter Tyrell: *folds hands*
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Governor Warner and Mr. Tyrell. Next question?
Mr E: *Raises hand*
Guntur Kivlov: Yes, to the gentleman in Red and Black?
Mr E: I was listening and I heard a lot of I will. But with the esteemed company we have here the one
Mr E: thing the room does is empower the people. How will the person chosen help to empower the
Mr E: people with their position to help them out
Guntur Kivlov: Mr. LaShadow, will you please take this question?
The Shadow: Of course.
The Shadow: The people need Justice as I was saying earlier.
The Shadow: The court system is set up to protect them against those that would do Wrong to them.
The Shadow: One of their basic rights is to live in a land where their rights are protected.
The Shadow: I hope that answers that for you.
Mr E: *nods appreciatively*
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Sir, and thank you Mr. LaShadow. We have time for one more question.
Guntur Kivlov: Are there any more questions from the audience?
Tanda: *raises hand*
Guntur Kivlov: Yes Governor?
Tanda: Having served as Justicar, my take is unique, how willing are you to stand your ground
Tanda: against fellow Justicars for what you believe is Just?
Walter Tyrell: *nods*
Guntur Kivlov: *nods solemnly*
Guntur Kivlov: I will address this to each of our candidates.
Guntur Kivlov: Countess, perhaps you first?
Nevahs Blazefire: *Smiles a little.* I am completely willing to stand my ground -- as long as the information brought to us is based on fact and not hearsay. I will do everything in my power to make certain Justice is served even if my fellow Justicars
Nevahs Blazefire: disagree.
Nevahs Blazefire: *nods at Kivlov* That is all, Councilor.
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you.
Guntur Kivlov: Mr. LaShadow?
The Shadow: If I believe I am right, then there will be no backing down. I won't back down so that
The Shadow: the other Justice can avoid having their egos bruised.
The Shadow: I would stand up to the King if I had to, if the cause was worthy.
The Shadow: That is all.
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you Mr. LaShadow, Mr. Tyrell?
Walter Tyrell: Justicars do not make the law and should be cautious even in interpreting it. When we are
Walter Tyrell: presented with evidence we should determine its merits. We should approach each case with
Walter Tyrell: and open mind. Yew once we have made our decision unless new evidence surfaces I would stand
Walter Tyrell: firm in m decision. I think it is critical that every Councilman, Countess, Governor or
Walter Tyrell: peasant get the same protection from the law and I will not let power or position sway
Walter Tyrell: my decision. Thank you Councilor
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you again Governor Knighthawke for your question and former service to Justice.
Tanda: *nods*
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you to the candidates for giving us their time to help us with our decisions
Guntur Kivlov: and thank you to the citizens here for taking the time to learn about our candidates
The Shadow: It was an honor.
Guntur Kivlov: Ballots will be available tomorrow morning from the steward next to the 2nd floor mailbox
Guntur Kivlov: of the Newcastle Hall of Virtue. The keyword is VOTE
Guntur Kivlov: They must be submitted by 7:55 under central skies on the 10th.
Guntur Kivlov: Each vote must be signed and each citizen votes once.
Guntur Kivlov: Thank you all for your time. I declare this debate closed.
