Beating Discord into Working

Post by Lord DaKaren » Sun Jul 31, 2016 6:05 pm

These directions were written for Windows 10, but should work for Windows 7 & 8.x)

If you have Discord already installed, close out of the program and then QUIT it using the white game controller icon in your Windows System tray (lower right corner of your taskbar. You may need to click the ^ icon to get the Discord icon to show).

Next, open Task Manager (right click the task bar to get the menu). On the Processes tab, scroll down and look for Discord to be listed (should be there at least twice). Right click and end the tasks. Next, click the Startup tab. Scroll down and disable any instances of Discord there.

Next, we want to go to the Windows Control Panel and uninstall Discord.

Then we get to clean up after Discord’s god-awful installer. Open a File Explorer window (Windows Key+E) If you don’t already have windows set to show hidden files and folders, we next to set that up first. At the top left of the File Explorer window should be four tabs: File, Home, Share and View (if not, press the Alt key and they *should* appear). Click View. Towards the right end of the new menu should be three vertically stacked check boxes, make sure the boxes for “File Name Extensions” and “Hidden Files” are both checked.

Now to navigate to where Discord was installed. Along the left hand side of the File Explorer window should be a column of text. Find “This PC” and double click on it to expand its list, then double click on “Local Disk (C:),” now, find the Users directory and click on it. Look for YOUR username in the list of folders and double click it. Look for the AppData folder (should be slightly lighter than the rest) and double click it. Double click the Local folder to view the contents and look for a Discord folder. Single click it and delete.

Now, we want to go BACK to the AppData folder and then click on the Roaming folder. Look for Discord in its contents and delete it.

You MUST reboot your PC now.

Once you are back online, go here and download the Discord App: https://discordapp.com/download (save it to your desktop if you can). Right-click DiscordSetup.exe and run it as Administrator. Hopefully, Discord will then install and function normally.

If a problem still persists, or Discord refuses to install properly, redo this whole process (Yes, really you must!) and then install the Discord Public Beta Test version by clicking the ‘Living on the Edge? Get the Public Test Build’ link on the download page. Save it to your desktop and run it as Administrator.

You should now be back in Discord.

Remember, you MUST run Discord as Administrator for it to work properly with any game. You will have to reset it to run as Administrator every single time it updates. Every. Single. Time.
