History of the Walrus Festival [2018 Update]

In its early years, Vesper, a bustling port and mercantile city, had a steady trade in walrus. The walrus gave food, pelts, and ivory to Vesper. Walrus oil kept its lanterns burning through the cold, dark nights of winter. At this, the darkest time of the year, the people of Vesper give thanks for the creature that sustained their ancestors.

The walruses themselves have a decidedly different view of the holiday. Lead by Bucky and Splat, they seek vengeance for the slaughter of their ancestors. They are often assisted by pigs, though it is unknown whether the porcine creatures bear a similar grudge or have an agenda all their own. Though their plans often fail, the walruses are undaunted.

In 2010, the walruses launched a surprise attack on Vesper’s Walrus Festival celebrations. In 2011, the walruses invited everyone to a banquet to make amends… and tried to slaughter all their guests, with their pig allies staging an amphibious landing on the beaches of Kos Heb. In 2012, Bucky and Splat rebuilt the mechanical horror S.C.R.O.O.G.E. That plan failed spectacularly and the walrus leaders were killed.

In 2013, from the afterlife, Bucky and Splat rallied demon pigs to attack the living! In 2014, the walruses used the power of a magic mirror to lure humans into the frozen wasteland of death. Their plot was only discovered because greedy Vesper merchants sent forces into the afterlife to rescue the two anti-mascots, purely to boost sales of plush walrus toys.

In 2015, Bucky’s plan was that the walruses and pigs would disguise themselves as turkeys and launch a surprise attack on the humans. Unfortunately, the messenger was Splat, to whom one bird is much the same as another. Peacock costumes were not conducive to a successful ambush.

In 2016, the shopkeepers turned Vesper into a winter wonderland. Bucky and Splat figured out how to bring snowmen to life. Snowalruses, snowpigs, snowmen, and living ice sculptures descended upon shoppers!

In 2017, whimsical candy maker Carmela Fondant brought a sugar rush to the town. That is, until an angry mob chasing Bucky and Splat stumbled into her factory, where it was discovered that she had walruses and pigs captive as what the Merchant’s Guild is now referring to as “uncompensated, involuntary employees.”

This year, traditionalists are accusing the merchants of waging a “War on Walrus Festival”:
